Apple rarely announces the beta schedule for a software update in advance. This time it did, in effect: a press release on its Chinese Apple Newsroom site, describing the rollout of Apple Intelligence in China, confirmed that testing in the country will begin on Nov. 4.

One distinction matters here. Apple gave a start date only for the Apple Intelligence test. It has not directly confirmed that the first beta of iOS 27.3 will ship on that date, though the test will run as part of the next iOS developer beta.

A long regulatory road and earlier reports

The background is a drawn-out one. In mid-July, Apple Intelligence was reported to have cleared a significant regulatory hurdle after lengthy talks with Chinese regulators and repeated delays. A few weeks ago, it was reported that Apple planned to launch the platform in China in December with iOS 27.3, but that Siri AI and other new features would not be part of that first release.

The following day, a Chinese state-backed outlet reported that Tim Cook had confirmed regulatory approval for the platform and that a test version was expected before the end of October. Last Monday, Apple released iOS 27.2 and its counterparts on other platforms, expanding Siri AI support to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. The same day, it said four more languages, including Traditional Chinese, would be supported by the end of the year. That announcement offered nothing new on Apple Intelligence in China, and Siri AI itself will remain unavailable in the country for now.

Qwen integration and first-release features

According to the press release, users in China will get an enhanced Siri experience, including Type to Siri, and will be able to tap Alibaba's Qwen model for certain requests. Siri AI itself will not be part of this first release. The Qwen integration will extend to Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence as well. Apple says users will be able to ask questions about photos and documents such as PDFs and presentations, and generate original content from scratch through Writing Tools. Accessing Qwen requires signing in with an account or using Sign in with Apple.

The first wave will also include Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Clean Up in Photos, natural-language photo search, priority notifications, notification summaries and Smart Reply.

Supported devices and release timing

The initial phase will be limited to the iPhone, with other platforms to follow once the necessary regulatory approvals are secured. The features will be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the iPhone 16 and later, the iPhone Air and the iPhone Duo. Both Siri and the device language must be set to English or Simplified Chinese.

Apple also confirmed that the features will reach the public in December with the official release of iOS 27.3. Normally, the company seeds the first beta of the next update shortly after the previous version ships; no such beta for iOS 27.3 has arrived yet.
