Apple Sends Stores Guidance on iPhone Duo Inner Screen Cracks
In an internal note to Apple Stores and authorized service providers, Apple explained how to diagnose and fix cracked inner displays on the iPhone Duo. The company says only a small number of units are affected.

Apple this week sent an internal note to Apple Store employees and authorized service providers about cracking on the iPhone Duo's inner display. The note, which later surfaced in press reports, tells technicians how to inspect devices from customers who report the problem and how to repair or replace them.
The company says the issue affects only a small number of devices. Still, the fact that Apple sent its service network formal internal guidance suggests the problem has been seen often enough to warrant a common approach. Apple maintains that most iPhone Duo units are not susceptible and describes the matter as limited.
What technicians have been told
According to the note, when a customer reports a problem with the iPhone Duo's inner display, technicians are to inspect the device and then repair or replace it following standard procedures. The instructions themselves are fairly simple; what stands out is that a dedicated note was prepared at all.
Apple recommends that users who have display problems with the iPhone Duo contact AppleCare to request a replacement. Support is available through Apple's website or, in the US and Canada, by calling 1-800-APL-CARE.
Apple's public statement
In a public statement on Monday, Apple said it was aware of an issue affecting the inner display and that it concerned a small number of iPhone Duo units. The internal note keeps to the same framing, so the message Apple has given the public and its service network is consistent.
The company says most iPhone Duo units are not susceptible, and that in affected devices the defects appear to emerge fairly soon after use begins. Apple also said there is no recall, and there is currently no public repair program for the issue on its website. For now, the remedy amounts to affected users applying individually to have their devices repaired or replaced.
How the problem surfaced and a possible cause
About a week ago, shortly after devices began reaching customers, a handful of early users reported that the inner display had cracked. The complaints describe lines appearing across the middle of the screen and extending toward the right side.
Repair site iFixit said it had taken the iPhone Duo apart and that the problem is likely linked to a faulty hinge in the affected units. Apple has not yet commented on the underlying cause, so the hinge theory remains an assessment based solely on a teardown. The real source of the problem stays unclear until Apple offers an official explanation.
For now, the path for users is clear: anyone who notices a crack or lines on the inner screen should contact AppleCare and request a repair or replacement under standard procedures. Whether Apple will announce a dedicated repair program for the issue is not yet known.
