Nothing to Launch Its First Screenless AI Device in December
CEO Carl Pei says the company's first AI-focused product arrives next month. The device will not have a new screen, and little else has been revealed.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei has announced that the company will release its first AI-focused device in December. In a post on X, Pei said the product will not have a new screen. The announcement comes roughly a year after he first said Nothing was planning AI-focused devices and an AI operating system, making it the first concrete sign of a product since then.
Pei gave almost no detail about what the device actually is. He described it this way: "Our first AI-native product launches next month. It's a tool, but with the personality that defines a Nothing product and crafted with care. It doesn't have a new screen, and it couldn't have been an app." The head of the company is saying plainly that the product could not have been built as an app, but he did not explain why.

What the post tells us, and what it doesn't
Pei's words offer only a few clues about the device's identity: it is framed as a tool, it has no new screen, and it is something that could not have been done as an app. Beyond that, no name or technical specification has been shared, and pricing and sales details are also unknown for now.
The image attached to the post shows the NOTHING(R) wordmark in the top left corner and, beneath it, an indistinct black shape with rounded corners. Nothing about the device's form can be inferred from it. It is also unclear whether or when the company will present the product in more detail; all that is available is Pei's short post and that single image.
Rumors and the company's direction
Last month, a report claimed that Nothing is preparing two pairs of AI-powered smart glasses, one of them without a camera. An earlier rumor suggested the company was repositioning itself as an AI-first firm and moving toward AI accessories.
These remain rumors, and the company has not confirmed them. Whether the glasses claim has anything to do with the product due in December is not known. Still, the direction of the speculation lines up with the path Pei outlined when he first announced the shift toward AI-focused devices.
A crowded field of screenless AI gadgets
Nothing's device will not be the first screenless AI product. Earlier examples include the Humane AI Pin, Friend, and even AI-powered plush toys. OpenAI, reportedly working with Jony Ive, is also said to be developing an AI-powered smart speaker. The category already has both tested and upcoming products.
Pei said the industry is searching for AI's iPhone moment: a magic consumer product, whether a pendant, a pin, glasses or a companion device, that would make AI part of everyone's life. Looking for the iPhone of AI today, he added, is a dead end. The remark can be read as an outsider's critique of the sector's current quest, but how Nothing will position its own product has yet to emerge.
