SpaceX Reportedly in Talks to Buy or Use Boost Mobile's Network
According to a report, SpaceX is weighing a Boost Mobile route to launch its own mobile service, part of a plan to turn Starlink into a major carrier.

SpaceX is reportedly in talks to launch its own mobile service through budget carrier Boost Mobile. According to a report, a deal could take one of two forms: SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile outright, or gaining access to its network. Neither option has been confirmed.
The development comes as SpaceX pursues its goal of turning Starlink into a major mobile carrier. Neither SpaceX nor Boost Mobile immediately responded to requests for comment, so the claims remain unverified by the parties involved. Given the company's recent moves in mobile, the news looks like another notable step.
The Musk and Ergen conversation
According to the report, Elon Musk discussed a possible deal last month with Charlie Ergen, chairman of Boost Mobile's parent company EchoStar. The arrangement would mean SpaceX either buying Boost Mobile or accessing its network. Details of the conversation have not been shared, and it is unclear how far the talks have progressed or where the sides stand.
Boost Mobile's network currently runs on T-Mobile and AT&T infrastructure. For SpaceX to launch its own service on that foundation, it would likely need permission from both carriers. In other words, an agreement with Boost Mobile alone may not be enough; the two larger operators could also have to sign off.
Starlink's string of mobile moves
SpaceX has taken a series of steps in recent months to expand its mobile business. Last year it bought wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar. More recently it added a portfolio of low-band spectrum licenses, which are said to allow the Starlink Mobile signal to penetrate inside buildings.
A report published last month also said SpaceX is negotiating access to at least 80,000 cell towers in the United States. The company's mobile service is expected to combine its direct-to-cell satellite constellation with a terrestrial network, so the plan does not rest on satellite connectivity alone. Taken together, the spectrum licenses, tower access and a possible Boost Mobile deal suggest SpaceX is laying groundwork for a carrier business from several directions.
Background: Boost Mobile, EchoStar and Starlink
Boost Mobile is a carrier known for affordable plans. Its parent, EchoStar, is the telecommunications company that sold spectrum licenses to SpaceX last year, which means the two companies already had a commercial relationship before these talks. Starlink is SpaceX's satellite-based connectivity service.
Whether the talks will result in a deal is unclear. Because the parties have not commented, the scope, financial terms and timeline of any agreement are unknown. Until the companies make their positions clear, developments should be treated as allegations rather than confirmed facts.
