iPhone Duo inner screens reportedly cracking along the hinge

Some buyers of the iPhone Duo, which went on sale Friday, say the inner display has cracked on its own. The damage looks strikingly similar from case to case.

Some buyers of the iPhone Duo, which went on sale Friday, are reporting that the inner display has cracked and broken on its own. Many of the complaints are being shared in a social media community, and what stands out is how closely the damage resembles one another.

According to the information available, the problem follows the same pattern for different users. The screen cracks along the central line where the hinge sits, after which a horizontal block of pixels stays permanently lit white. Roughly ten separate examples have been identified so far, but it is not yet clear how widespread the issue is. Plenty of users describe similar experiences, yet there is no confirmed data.

How quickly does the crack appear?

The time it takes for the crack to show up varies from user to user. Since the devices could only be taken out of the box from Friday morning, the window appears to be short. Some users say the screen broke during the phone's initial setup.

The number of cases looks limited for now. Still, the fact that the breakage always appears along the same line and with the same display fault raises the question of whether these are truly independent incidents. There is no firm data on that point.

Replacement experiences differ by where you bought

Most affected buyers who went to an Apple Store were reportedly able to have the device swapped directly for a new one.

Those who bought from a carrier may have fared worse. Carriers are said to have no spare stock to hand out immediately. One user says they were told they must have dropped the phone and would have to pay the repair fee themselves.

A possible cause: a hinge component

The leading working theory is that a defective hinge component made its way into a particular batch of iPhone Duo units. According to the claim, one part of the hinge sits slightly misaligned and pushes upward, pressing against the inner display and causing it to crack. This explanation has not been verified and remains a hypothesis for now.

On social media, some users suggest avoiding pressing on the middle of the inner screen when closing the device, saying it could trigger the problem. Whether that advice actually holds is unclear, and Apple has not issued any official guidance on how the device should be held while folding and unfolding it.

Putting the numbers in perspective

The reports are worrying, but Apple has likely shipped hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of units. Against figures like that, the share of phones that have failed looks small for now, and the majority of users are expected to use their new device without trouble.

Apple was contacted for comment; this story will be updated if a response arrives. For now, in the examples reported, most people who bought from a store and ran into the problem have been able to exchange their device directly for a new one.
