Archive of Our Own, better known as AO3, one of the best-known gathering places for people who read and write fan fiction, is currently offline. The nonprofit that runs the site, the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), took the platform down just after 3 a.m. ET. According to the first notice on its status page, the outage was supposed to last only 12 hours.

OTW's latest update, however, points to a far longer wait. The organization now estimates that restoring the service will take about two weeks, and in the worst case as long as four. It also voiced hope that the site might reopen earlier in a limited, low-performance form.

How long will the outage last?

OTW's announcement says that even if the site reopens early with partial functionality and reduced performance, it may have to be taken offline again from time to time until the underlying problem is fully resolved. In other words, a first reopening may not mean the interruptions are over. The organization advises users to follow its announcements for updates.

AO3 hosts millions of fan works based on existing books, films and TV series. Behind that content are both the people who create it and the many readers who come for stories about the characters and worlds they love. An outage that could stretch over weeks therefore affects a large community directly.

Data appears intact, but the cause is unclear

According to information passed along by a former AO3 volunteer who runs a community forum related to the platform, OTW has said the data on the site remains uncorrupted. If that is accurate, published stories should be safe.

Even so, the underlying cause of the outage has still not been disclosed. OTW had logged problems with email notifications, search, history and listing features between October 23 and 24, but the organization has not shared any detail about the issue it is dealing with now. As a result, it is unknown what the maintenance work actually covers or why it might take this long.

Security flaws and a volunteer engineering team

Over the past two weeks, two major security vulnerabilities surfaced, one in the PHP scripting language and one involving TLS certificates. They forced some websites offline so they could patch themselves. Fanlore, another OTW site, was briefly shut down because of the PHP flaw. Still, it should be stressed that the organization has given no indication that the AO3 outage is related to either vulnerability.

Whatever the cause, OTW's engineering team is made up of volunteers rather than paid staff, which could be one factor slowing the rollout of fixes. OTW has been asked for comment on the outage and the maintenance work under way, and this report will be updated if it responds. For now, users can only follow the organization's official announcements and wait to learn when, and at what capacity, the site will return.
