Jailbroken PS5s Can Now Run Steam Games via Playden

Owners of jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles can now start trying out games from their Steam libraries on the console itself. The enabler is a GitHub project named Playden for PS5, a launcher that lets users sign in with their Steam account and install games from their library directly onto the console.

The launcher is an adaptation of Playden, an application originally designed for macOS. The project is currently labeled alpha and does not deliver a smooth experience from start to finish in every game. Below, we look at how it works, which games have been tested, and what risks users face.

How Playden for PS5 works

When a game is launched, Playden for PS5 creates a dedicated Windows environment and runs the game through prospero-win, a port of Wine to the PS5. Wine is a well-known compatibility layer that allows Windows applications to run on other operating systems.

The launcher does not run the game itself. Instead, it generates a separate PS5 application for each installed game, so a Steam title appears on the console's home screen as its own tile. The game's files, settings and any crashes are isolated from the launcher and from other games, meaning a problem in one title does not affect the launcher or anything else.

The project also ships a separate runtime package. It contains Wine for the PS5, the necessary graphics drivers, the Windows environment and an application shell template for games. This modular structure is what allows the launcher to build a distinct app for every game.

Compatibility and the limits of an alpha release

Playden for PS5 can launch Steam games successfully, but that does not mean a smooth experience from beginning to end in every title. The project's developer says the work is still in alpha. X user v7dt1 reported being able to open a game that later crashed.

On Reddit, u/Cevap, posting in the r/PS5_Jailbreak community, wrote that Portal ran without problems through the launcher, apart from the mouse cursor not showing and the ESC key failing to open the options menu. In other words, even games that run can have gaps on the control side.

The developer lists American Truck Simulator, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, GTA: Vice City, Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2 among the compatible games, along with others. Still, appearing on the list does not guarantee trouble-free play, and in an alpha project results can vary from game to game.

Requirements, risks and the wider context

Using the launcher requires a jailbroken console. The developer also stresses that the application is an unofficial Steam client. No problems have been reported with third-party Steam clients so far, but Valve does not officially support them, and any risk that comes with using one rests with the user.

The development comes after Sony announced it would end production of physical game discs by January 2028. The decision upset many players, and a petition against it reached roughly 200,000 signatures within a week of the announcement.

Following the same announcement, various jailbreak efforts and emulators for the PS5 have also begun to surface. These initiatives are being read as attempts by users to regain control over their hardware.
