A new claim based on supply chain sources says Apple has asked its suppliers to produce 16 million MacBook Neo units in 2027. That is twice the volume expected for this year. The same sources suggest that MacBook Neo shipments are the main driver of growth in Apple's Mac sales.

Apple introduced the MacBook Neo in March 2026. The machine pairs the A18 Pro chip with 8GB of RAM and comes in Silver, Blush, Citrus and Indigo. It launched at $599 and was later raised in price. Below, we look at the details of the claim, the price change and what is known about a possible second-generation model.

Price rises to $699

The MacBook Neo went on sale at $599. In June, as part of a broader repricing across its Mac and iPad lineup, Apple raised the starting price to $699. The company continues to offer a $100 discount to university students and education staff.

The 16 million production request therefore comes after a period in which the product has been selling at the higher price. The sources do not elaborate on the reasoning behind the figure, but its scale suggests Apple expects serious volume from this model. That is an inference from the size of the number, not something the report itself states.

A record year for the Mac

John Ternus, who held his first earnings call as Apple CEO, said the company sold more Macs in fiscal 2026 than in any previous year. Apple does not break out Mac sales by model. Even so, the supply chain sources cited in the report say MacBook Neo shipments were the most decisive factor behind that growth.

Because Apple does not publish model-level figures, the exact size of that contribution cannot be verified; the sources' assessment is the only data point available. Still, the picture suggests that an affordable Mac now plays a significant role in Apple's notebook sales.

What to expect from a second generation

A report published in September said Apple is planning a second-generation MacBook Neo for 2027, with an A19 Pro chip, 12GB of RAM and new color options. Today's report does not mention a second-generation model.

Even so, if Apple decides to refresh the machine about a year after its debut, in March, the 16 million estimate would look consistent. That scenario is not confirmed, and both the specifications of a second-generation model and the product mix behind the production target remain unclear for now.
