Password manager 1Password has announced a new platform that lets AI agents log in to user accounts without ever seeing the password. Called 1Password for Agents, the system acts as a security layer between agents and the accounts they work with.

The company says the move comes as a growing number of users hand complex tasks such as shopping and travel bookings to autonomous AI. Banks, meanwhile, are reportedly worried about agents gaining unauthorized access to customer accounts.

How agents log in without seeing the password

Until now, when an AI agent hit a login page, the user had to step in and open the session by hand. That defeats much of the point of delegating the task and keeps interrupting the workflow. 1Password for Agents is designed to remove that interruption.

In the system, the agent identifies itself to 1Password with a unique digital key. The user still has to approve the login request on a trusted device. Once that approval is given, the credentials are shared securely in the background. Plaintext credentials and one-time codes are never passed to the agent, which is meant to ease concerns that an agent could go rogue and be misused.

Why it matters: credentials in the age of agents

AI agents are pieces of software that can navigate websites and take actions on a user's behalf. Combine them with password managers and a critical question arises: does the agent need to be handed the password to get into an account?

1Password's answer is to share neither the plaintext password nor the one-time code with the agent. The agent can do its job, while the user stays in the loop by approving the request on their own trusted device.

Access limits and partnerships

Aashish Tripathi, the company's Chief Product Officer, said: "An agent should be able to do the job it was asked to do without getting permanent access to everything behind the account."

1Password is also working on tighter integrations with leading names in AI, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta. The goal is to make credential sharing smoother across these agents.

Who gets it and which agents are supported

Eligible Individual and Family plan users hosted on 1Password.com will get the feature at no extra cost. Plans hosted on 1Password.eu and 1Password.ca are not covered.

Grok Bot and Meta Muse are among the first AI agents due to launch in the coming days. ChatGPT Work, Dots and Claude Duet are so far listed only as "coming soon."
