Elder Scrolls 6 Gets a Name: Sentinel, but No Release Date
Bethesda revealed the title of the next Elder Scrolls game in a video marking its 40th anniversary. A short teaser and the studio's follow-up post point to Hammerfell as the setting.

Bethesda Game Studios has finally given the next Elder Scrolls game an official name: The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel. The news came at the end of a video celebrating the studio's 40th anniversary and looking back on its achievements. In the closing moments, Bethesda creative director Todd Howard shared a brief look at the new game.
The title matches what fans have long speculated. Even so, no release date or concrete gameplay details were given, and the studio made clear that it will be a while before it is ready to show more.
What the teaser shows
Howard said everyone keeps asking about Elder Scrolls 6, and that the anniversary seemed like a good moment to reveal the game's real name. The teaser is very short and contains no gameplay footage. The camera moves across sand, a magical-looking scroll appears, and the game's title then fills the screen.
The video's description includes a passage of in-universe text, presented as the work of the Moth Priest Yazar of Hammerfell High Queen Iradne, dated 4E 206. It describes the scroll as offering only a glimmer, a thinly parted curtain, and speaks of a lost future, a corrupted triumph and the sands of time scattered by fate. Together with the desert imagery, the lines hint at where the game takes place.
That is the extent of what was shown: a desert, a scroll and the title. With no gameplay on display, the announcement is about the game's name and setting rather than the experience it will offer.
Is the setting Hammerfell?
Bethesda's follow-up post on X largely confirms that the game is set in Hammerfell. The studio said it felt great to share both the name and the location with players. The sand footage in the teaser and the Hammerfell reference in the description reinforce that impression.
The Elder Scrolls is a long-running role-playing series developed by Bethesda Game Studios. Where the next game would be set has been one of the questions fans have asked most for years, so even a setting inferred from hints counts as a notable development.
A long wait continues
The Elder Scrolls 6 was first announced in 2018, and no new information had been shared about it since. This teaser and name reveal are therefore the first new material after a very long gap.
Bethesda thanked fans for 40 years of shared memories and stressed that development is ongoing. It also added that some time must pass before it is ready to share more. There is no release date for Sentinel for now, and no hint of when the game might arrive; the studio's message suggests players will need to be patient a while longer.
Still, after such a long silence, having both the name and the setting pinned down is an encouraging step for fans of the series. The studio saying openly that development continues also confirms that the project is alive.
